7 Things You Should Never Say to Your Boss (EVER)

7 Things You Should Never Say to Your Boss (EVER) Are you friendly with your boss? Are they  someone that you can laugh and joke with, or are they someone you are petrified of? Whichever situation it is, there are some things you should simply  never say to them. Ever. Heres our run down of the top 7: 1. I cant! When it comes to work, there is no such word as cant.  Bosses would love for you to be able to do something, or at least try to do it. If you tell them I cant it not only shows a lack of unwillingness, but a lack of confidence too. You should be confident at work, if you want to go far. If you give things a go and fail, your boss will at least appreciate that you tried.  Its the same for thats not my area or thats not part of my job. Basically, do a Jim Carrey and try to always say yes, and  perhaps follow up with, I can try my best. 2. Can I have a raise? You may dream about having enough money to build a bed made from notes, but steer clear of asking for a raise (or a promotion). Today Im gonna ask for a raisewish me luck! Jon David Sandez (@JonDavidSandez1) September 23, 2016 Both raises and promotions are there to be earned through hard work, effort and results. Instead of asking, present a well-written proposal (which proves why are you important to the company) and ask your boss to review it. If they feel you can advance, theyll give you what you want.  Once the work is done, then maybe you can build your bed from notes. READ MORE: How NOT to Ask for a Raise or Promotion 3. Can I leave early? All full time jobs have an allocation of personal holiday (sometimes called annual leave), and this is there to be used for personal reasons. If you want to go away to a sunny country with your partner, or want to take a day off every so often, use your holiday. https://twitter.com/drdareing/status/781659563560873984 Your boss does not want to be paying for you to go home early and play on your Xbox.  If you do want to leave an hour or two early for legitimate reasons, earn any extra time you need by making up your hours, or just use your holiday allocation. Your mum will appreciate it even more, trust me. 4. Can I come in late? See above. 5. How do I benefit from this? Sometimes (or most of the time), your work and projects will involve helping your colleagues. If youre not working alone, youll be part of a team of people who will all have strengths, weaknesses and passions. I love my job, I love working in a team. So much potential, this next year is going to be a big one. ?? Joe (@JayFly_7) October 28, 2014 Its always important to be a team player, as its a trait that a lot of bosses see in a positive light. If youre able to work well in a team, your boss may even promote you to team leader. 6. Ill leave! This is a must dont ever threaten to leave the company. If you feel like your job is something you dont want to do, go home and weigh up the pros and cons.  Which parts of your job are keeping you in there? Are there elements which are making your career bad for your health? Compare them and see which are the most crucial. I really want to quit my job so I have enough time to focus on myself and self improvement. brandycake ?????? (@brandycake_) September 15, 2016 If you make a swift decision and say youll go to your boss before thinking, itll show you as unprofessional, and theyll consider you a flight risk, which is something you dont want to be. 7. Im bored. Every so often, you may have a moment at work where youve been working on the same project or client for a long time. Everything may be mixing into one and you cant tell the difference between your various responsibilities. The fact of the matter is, youre being paid to do your job. Your boss gives you a job to do, and you have to work to make it interesting and fun. Never tell your boss that youre bored, as it will show that you are not capable of doing the job at hand.  If you want to suggest different ways of sprucing up your day to day list, then go for it telling someone youre bored is too negative to come back from. Take these tips to hand and youll never fall out with your boss and hopefully, youll end up with a fun job, with a fair holiday allocation, and a payrise or promotion!

Baby Boomer Personal Branding using Social Media - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Baby Boomer Personal Branding using Social Media - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Are you a baby boomer? Are you using social media to develop and promote your personal brand? Am I speaking gibberish? I wrote in a previous post that many baby boomers struggle with the concept of personal brand. In the old days it was your reputation. With the rise of the Internet many jobs can be done from just about anywhere. So, you aren’t just competing for your next job with the guy around the corner but everyone around the world. How do you create a global presence? Social media. So how do you create a personal brand using social media? Step #1 Pick a Social Network There are a lot of social networks to choose from. You cannot be on all of them. There is just not enough time in the day. So pick one! If you are looking to create a personal brand around your professional life I would recommend you choose LinkedIn. Step #2 Create a Profile Get a good picture. Yes, you need a picture. When you think of a brand do you get a picture in your mind? Of course. Not having a picture raises questions. Sometimes just throwing one up there raises questions, too. When someone looks at the picture what does it tell them about you? You have to be recognizable from the picture. I have seen a few pictures where so many years were removed using Photoshop that I could not recognize them from the photo. Enter only your last 10-15 years of work history. Do not enter the year you received any college degrees. Step #3 Get Connected Go through all of your e-mail contacts and connect with them. Search LinkedIn for colleagues from past jobs, college friends, high school friends…. Take the time to reconnect on a personal level. That means don’t just send the standard message. Write something personal in your invitation. Join groups that pertain to your career interests. There are a million of them. And visit them frequently. Comment, positively, on other people’s posts. Step #4 Engage You are now virtually connected with people on line. Read, share and comment on what you find. The whole idea is to be social. Meet new people. It is in this last step that you develop your personal brand. How you interact, what you share or even what you create will tell people a lot about your talents, skills and expertise. Step #5 Return to Step #1 and Repeat Once and only once you have become comfortable with the selected social network pick another. For baby boomers who are looking to create a professional personal brand beyond LinkedIn I recommend Google+. Google+ is about finding people with similar interests. If you are adventurous you might try Twitter. It has taken quite a while for me to get comfortable working with and interacting on Twitter. But the site has video tutorials on how to use it. So go for it! Are you ready to take the plunge? Author: Marc Miller is the founder of Career Pivot which helps Baby Boomers design careers they can grow into for the next 30 years. Marc authored the book Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers, published in January 2013, which has been featured on Forbes.com, US News and World Report, CBS Money-Watch and PBS’ Next Avenue. Marc has made six career pivots himself, serving in several positions at IBM in addition to working at Austin, Texas startups, teaching math in an inner-city high school and working for a local non-profit. How to sell anything to anyone

How to sell anything to anyone People are always asking me what our business model is for Brazen Careerist. Now that we have a network of 150 great bloggers, we are focusing on companies. A lot of companies come to us asking for access to the bloggers. Not surprisingly, companies want to recruit from the bloggers and their friends. But we think what the bloggers want is good conversation. We think that offering someone a job without conversation is like walking up to a stranger in a bar and asking for sex. It doesnt work. You need to establish some sort of rapport first. People want that from a job offer as well. People today want to work for a company that they feel some sort of connection toa connection probably from branding and conversation. So we want to help companies establish their brand as an employer, and create a conversation with people theyd like to hire, now or in the future. Thats our next step. And we have to sell the companies on this idea. So we had one of my mentors, who is also an outstanding salespersonKathleen Kurkegive us a little coaching session on how to sell. All of us at Brazen Careerist were in the training (there are eight employees now). And all of us were struck by how Kathleens advice applies to so much of life, not only to trying to get companies to engage the Brazen Careerist community. Heres what Kathleen said: 1. Ask a good question. You probably want a yes or no answer: Are you gonna buy my product, yes or no? But yes or no is short-term and opportunity limiting, because anything but a definite yes will be a showstopper. So ask instead a question like: What are the challenges you are facing? This sort of open-ended question helps you to understand the challenges, solutions, or opportunities you are trying to capture. And the more you can align yourself with your client and their concerns, the more likely you will be to capture their business. The better you get at asking these questions, the better answers youll get; and the best answers get you closer to the person who is accountable for solving the problem. And thats the person who will be most likely to give you that yes answer that you are looking for. 2. Solve a problem. People will buy stuff from you because you are solving a problem or capitalizing on an opportunity. In other words, people only buy stuff if it helps them make money or save money. If you cannot trace your solution to either making money or saving money, then you have a problem.

Should I hire a professional resume writer - Sterling Career Concepts

Should I hire a professional resume writer Should I hire a professional resume writer? Resume writing is a value-added professional service. While in a conversation recently, I came up with a great analogy. If you’re reading this blog or visiting my site because you are considering whether or not to hire a professional resume writer, then the following is something to consider. Do you hire a tax professional to prepare your tax return? I do, but you don’t have to. Some people will download the forms and complete them on their own. Others will buy a software program to walk them through it. Then there are those who see the efficiency and value of tapping into the tax professional’s knowledge and skill to complete the forms quickly and maximize their return.See the parallels to resume writing? Some people will write their own. Others will use a Microsoft Word template to create the document (oy â€" my stomach hurts just thinking about it), and then there are those who see the value in hiring a professional to create the document that becomes the cornerstone of thei r job search process. They may recognize that writing is not their strong point. They may need help identifying their own strengths and accomplishments, or quite frankly, they may liken writingtheir resume to washing the windows (or preparing their taxes) and know theyre better offoutsourcing the project. Those of you who hire a tax professional to maximize your return (or minimize whatyouowe) can relate to the concept of hiring a professional resume writer to maximize the results of your job search. If the goal of a resume is to secure job interviews, then taking advantage of a writer’s knowledge of industry trends and best practices is one way to shorten the length of your job search. (Interview coaching is another, but that’s a topic I’ll save for another day.) I will be the first to admit that pairing with a writer is not the right choice for everyone, but when you think of writing your own resume, do you feel stressed, confused or nervous about what to highlight, how to structure or format the document, and how to set yourself apart from your peers? If so, then working with a professional will put your mind at ease, be a more efficient use of your time, and maximize your benefit. My next post will help you avoid the unfortunate scams that exist within the resume writing space. Related Post:How much will my professionally written resume save me? (March 14, 2009)
